Throw everything in a pot half filled with water:
- Half a chicken, or package of chicken bones; after boiling an hour or two, remove chicken- cool, and remove bones- put meat back in the pot
- Add a package of chicken soup mix from the matza ball box, or some consommé cubes
- 3-4 carrots slices
- 2-3 celery stalks sliced
- 2 onions chopped
- Any of these:
- 1 -2 parsnip peeled, sliced
- ½ rutabaga
- waxy turnip peeled chopped- gives it a great flavor
- A few small turnips peeled chopped
- A few garlic cloves chopped
- If you have parsley, cilantro or dill
- Salt and pepper to taste
Boil, skim off the top foam, let cool, skim the fat off the top; reheat.
Make matza balls: use box mix or new recipe “ Greatest Matza Balls” they are great! I always add a bit more matza meal
I heard about a nice tradition- putting a small piece of cooked carrot in the center- I make them in a separate pot, seasoned with soup mix/consomme
